Today I got punched in the face. I recently started going to a boxing gym and today we did some light sparring. My partner was more experienced than I was and I definitely got my ass kicked. Nonetheless, it was a great learning experience and I came out with a couple of takeaways:

  • Getting punched in the face sucks, its not so much that it hurts, its the element of surprise that gets you
  • Nothing teaches you proper technique like having someone attacking you. My stance was off and I would drop my hands every time I threw a punch, leaving my face wide open. Sparring for 5 mins taught me a lot more than a few classes would.
  • Learning how to defend myself is a must
  • Leave your ego at the door and take defeat gracefully. This is the only way to avoid injury and learn.

While I did enjoy today’s training, I am not a fan of getting hit on the head repeatedly so I don’t see myself pursuing boxing long term. However, I would like to explore something like jiu jitsu or Krav Maga which are great for self defence but with a lower risk of head injuries.
